President to submit proposal to UN to clear allegations on Army

President Maithripala Sirisena says he will submit a proposal to the United Nations (UN) on September 24th seeking to clear human rights allegations against the Army. Speaking at an event in Nivithigala today, the President said that the proposal will draw criticism from some people but yet he feels it is important that the proposal is presented to the UN. President Sirisena said that he will be addressing the UN on September 24th where he will speak on the need to clear the allegations against the Army related to the war.

He said that he will also brief the UN on the steps to be taken by the Government with regards to the LTTE. The President said that he feels the only way the human rights issue on Sri Lanka can be resolved is through discussions with the UN. The Sri Lanka Army has been accused of committing human rights abuses during the war. The UN Human Rights Council will in March next year discuss the steps taken by Sri Lanka to address the allegations. The Government has been accused of being slow to show progress on addressing most of the issues related to the war.
