Trade Unions chase away SLBC Director General !
Chandrapala Liyanage, the Director General of the state owned Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), has been chased away today (19) by the employees of the institution.
It is alleged that Mr. Liyanage had fraudulently secured 10 salary increments.
It is said that the Joint Trade Union Alliance of the SLBC has held a meeting with all employees today and revealed this.
Subsequently, the employees had surrounded the DG's office before chasing him away.
Mr. Sathkumara, the Secretary (Administration) of the Mass Media ministry had intervened to bring the situation under control. Even then, Mr. Loyanage had said that he had received his increments from the SLBC.
However, TU leaders had then produced a letter which not only revealed that Mr. Liyanage had made the request for the increments, but also that he had received an increment that was in arrears.
TU leaders have alleged that it was former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa who had pulled the strings behind the scenes to appoint Mr. Chandrapala to the relevant post.
Around 300 SLBC employees had surrounded Mr. Liyanage's office and he had been taken to safety in Mr. Sathkumara's car.
