Malwana mansion case - Basil Rajapaksa acquitted
Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa and another defendant have been acquitted from a case filed by the Attorney General over misappropriating state funds to purchase a plot of land and build a luxurious home in Malwana, Dompe.
The order was issued by the Gampaha Magistrates Court today.
The judge issued the order of acquittal as the complainants failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt, the charges against the defendants.
Basil Rajapaksa, the first defendant in the case, was served three indictments by the Attorney General for misappropriating state funds to purchase the 16-acre plot of land to build the home.
Despite the decision to continue the case, it was later postponed as Basil Rajapaksa informed the Supreme Court that he will not be attending the hearing owing to the situation in the country, while the second defendant informed Court through his lawyers that he will not be present in court due to an illness.
