Doctor pleads guilty for 2018 Accident that killed Police Officer; Ordered to pay Rs. 10 Mn to family

A specialist doctor who pleaded guilty to causing the death of a Police Inspector by driving recklessly was ordered to pay the family of the deceased Rs. 10 Million as compensation.

The order was made by the Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranajah on Friday (3).

The Attorney General charged the specialist doctor with six counts for causing the fatal accident on the 30th of December 2018.

The deceased Police Inspector was identified as IP Ajantha Gamini Perera, who was the Boxing Coach of the Police Team.

The accused was also ordered to pay Rs. 500,000/- each to the owners of two other vehicles that were damaged in the accident, as it was noted that the accident took place as she lost control of the vehicle.

Counsel appearing for the aggrieved party noted that the deceased Police Inspector was also an International Referee, and at the time of the accident, he was traveling with his wife and two children.

He also noted that the eldest son of the deceased who was injured is currently facing physical challenges, and he was a member of the Sri Lanka National Swimming Team.

The Counsel also pointed out that the accident had taken away his opportunity to take part in any swimming competition.

The State Counsel informed the court that an amended charge sheet will be submitted, and after the doctor pleaded guilty to those charges, the order was announced by the court.
