PM tells Shanakiyan to withdraw his statement!
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has demanded that TNA Parliamentarian Shanakiyan Rajaputhiran Rasamanickam withdraw his statement made in Parliament on May 20.
The Prime Minister made this observation while expressing his condolences on behalf of Parliamentarian Marakeerthi Athukorala.
Mr. Wickremesinghe further said :
“In the May 20th Hansard it is recorded where Mr. Rasamanickam had said the MPs were attacked as they raised their hands to approve the 20th Amendment to the constitution. Which means their houses were attacked because they had opposing views. All the budgets for 2020, 2021 and 2022 had wrong economic policies. Houses were torched because of those who raised their hands for both the 2020 and 2021 budgets. Kumara Welgama did nothing to support it. Remember that this had happened because they betrayed the people and the people’s mandate. How can an MP speak in this manner? I recall the assassination of late Minister Lakshman Kadirgramar. He was gunned down by the LTTE those who criticized him were outside of Parliament. However, now criticism is being spewed from within parliament itself. What does this mean? So, does he approve of these houses being set on fire? Do you approve of the two deaths? Do you approve of the attack on Mr. Welgama? I have one question to ask in this House... There is no issue with FSP as long as they engage in democratic activities. But they have stepped out of it. What is happening in this parliament? The MP should be made to tender an apology by the end of the next parliamentary week. If he fails to withdraw his statement, the Speaker should take action against him by appointing a committee to look into the statements made by him and submit a report. Such things cannot happen in this House.”
