When the protesters surrounded the presidential palace on the 09th of July, it is reported that former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa had also been in one of the rooms at the presidential palace.
When the protesters broke down the security fences erected by the security forces and entered the presidential palace, Basil Rajapaksa had escaped through the Foreign Ministry premises, it is revealed.
This was around half an hour before the protesters stormed the presidential palace.
The Secretary Defence, the Tri Forces Commanders and the IGP had been present in one of the operation rooms at the presidential palace coordinating the security forces.
The President was taken from the second floor of the presidential palace by the elevator to the Navy Headquarters and transported to the Trincomalee Port by the ship Ranabahu under the command of the Navy Commander, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugethenna.
