State of Emergency passed in Parliament

The proclamation on the state of emergency declared under the Public Security Ordinance was passed in the Parliament of Sri Lanka with a majority of 57 votes.

A total of 120 members voted in favour of the proclamation while 63 voted against it.

Once declared, a proclamation on the State of Emergency must be approved by Parliament within 14 days and can be extended every 30 days through the approval of Parliament.

Parliament was subsequently adjourned until August 09, 2022.
