Human Rights Watch says the government of Sri Lankan is using emergency regulations to harass and arbitrarily detain activists seeking political reform and accountability for the country's economic crisis.

Issuing a statement, the HRW said that since Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as president on July 21, 2022, the police and military have sought to curtail protests through the intimidation, surveillance, and arbitrary arrests of demonstrators, civil society activists, lawyers, and journalists.

Meanwhile, Mary Lawlor, a special representative of the United Nations on human rights, has questioned the arrest of the general secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Association Joseph Stalin.

The police arrested Joseph Stalin yesterday (04) on the charge of organizing an anti-state demonstration.

Yesterday (04), the court ordered the arrested Joseph Stalin to be remanded until the 12th.
