Chennai: T Nagar residents to boycott 2019 Lok Sabha polls
Theagaraya Nagar or T Nagar as it popularly called is a commercial hub located in the heart of Chennai city. A model residential area, T Nagar, transformed into a retail hub selling textiles, gold to electronics and furniture.
However, despite the popularity tag, residents of this locality are threatening to boycott the upcoming Lok Sabha 2019 polls if authorities fail to address their long pending demands.
Traffic Congestion, unauthorised buildings, rampant encroachment and unregulated parking are among the many problems faced by the residents.
Waging a war against the lack of civic amenities, the residents feel let down by the governments that have come to power so far.
"I would like to refer to recent speech of the President and the Prime Minister. They said voting is a sacred duty. What am I going to get by doing that sacred duty? When I do that sacred duty and when someone gets elected they also have to protect the sacredness. That's the way they should conduct themselves. But, this is not happening. We have to run from pillar to post to get things done," quips VS Jayaraman, a member of the Residents' Welfare Association.
83-year-old Kailasam is one of the oldest residents of T Nagar. A retired bank employee, Kailasam says civic issues do not feature in the radar of the local representatives. All their pleas not just go unheard but also face humiliation in the hands of authorities.
