PUCSL wants to reduce power cuts as Norochcolai is back

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) says that the General Manager of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to inform on the possibility of reducing daily power cuts as the Norochcholai Power Plant was added to the national grid.

Generator One of the Norochcholai Power Plant resumed operating on Friday (26) night, said the Ceylon Electricity Board on Saturday (27).

The CEB said that 600 MW was added to the national grid.

On the 15th of August 2022, it was announced that there has been a breakdown in Generator One of the Norochcholai Power Plant.

At the time, the Power and Energy Minister said that West Coast & other Fuel Power Plants will be used to manage the supply.

The Norochcholai Coal Power Plant comprises three generators, and each one generates 300 MW with an output of 900 MW to the National Grid.

A portion of the generated electricity was used for operations at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant, and one generator could only add 270 MW of electricity to the National Grid.

When Generator One malfunctioned, Generator Two was already out of service for essential maintenance.

Therefore, the national grid was short of 540 MW from the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant.
