Novice monk remanded over priest’s murder

The 18-year-old thero, who was arrested on suspicion of murdering Venerable Nadagamuwe Mahanama Thero, the head of Seeduwa Vettewa Sri Nandarama Temple, was remanded until 23rd September.

The Thero was remanded after being presented before the Negombo Magistrate on Saturday (17).

SSP Nihal Thalduwa said the suspect was arrested on 15th September while he was attempting to leave for Dubai.

The body of Venerable Nadagamuwe Mahanama Thero, the head of Seeduwa Vettewa Sri Nandarama Temple, was found in his room on 14th September.

The police found the body after receiving a complaint regarding to a strong smell emnating from his room.

The police said that the deceased Thero's eyes were blindfolded, a cloth was placed over his mouth and the body was covered with a robe.

The deceased monk was 50 years old.

Police said following the murder, Mahanama Thero had sold his SUV and the car and had tried to go abroad.

Another suspect has been arrested in connection with this incident, and the Negombo Magistrate ordered that he be remanded until 23rd September.
