Australia dominate SL in 1st day of 2nd test

Joe Burns and Travis Head both posted centuries on day one of the second Test against Sri Lanka, rescuing Australia from a dangerous 28/3 in the morning session.

Head became the first South Australian since Jason Gillespie in 2006 to score a Test ton, while Burns brought up his fourth hundred at the highest level and finished not out on 172 at the close.

The pair moved the hosts to a commanding position at 384/4 at stumps on the opening day at Manuka Oval after a partnership of 308, the highest ever by an Australian duo against Sri Lanka.

Australia fell into early trouble having elected to bat first.

Marcus Harris was the first to go, caught outside off stump from Vishwa Fernando for 11 off the last ball of the fourth over.

Usman Khawaja was next, his third-ball duck when he attempted to drive but only edged Fernando to second slip. Marnus Labuschagne became debutant Chamika Karunaratne’s first Test wicket in the ninth over, edging a ball that nipped away from him as he tried to defend it to leave Australia reeling.
