Unfair to up electricity bill at this time, says SLPP
The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has made a profit of Rs. 1 billion between August 10 and November 30, so it is unfair to increase the electricity bill at this time, Parliamentarian Rohitha Abeygunawardena said.
He made this statement while addressing the Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna (SLPP) media briefing yesterday.
"There are discussions underway these days regarding the increase in electricity bill. As SLPP, we know that the country's economy is in a precarious situation and that it has immensely affected the people. "Increasing the electricity bill at this juncture is another burden on them," he said.
The electricity bill was increased recently. If increased again at a time when the price of oil and goods have increased, people will not be able to bear this. Several media reports also claimed that the CEB had generated a profit of Rs. 1 billion between August 10 and November 30. If reports are correct, this is not the right time to increase the electricity bill.
The government should reconsider its decision to impose power cuts in the face of the upcoming high school examination.
This is the time where tourism is picking up in our country. Therefore, we had requested the government and the minister to refrain from interrupting power in the areas where tourists prefer to spend their time during their visit.
