PUCSL unveils four-steps to uninterrupted power supply until end of A/L exam

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) today requested the  consumers to minimise consumption to support uninterrupted power supply for the students who are appearing for the Advanced Level examination.

PUCSL Chairman Janaka Rathnayaka said today that electricity will be supplied continuously during the examination and until the end of it.

Every day, the PUCSL grants permission to impose a power outage during the course of the examination. It has been approved to impose power interruptions twice a day; in the evening and at night after the examination is over.

Accordingly, the power cut has been allowed for 40 minutes until 6.00 pm and for 1 hour and 20 minutes from 6.00 pm to 10.00 pm.

Failure to follow the recommendations by the PUCSL, the CEB was unable to provide 24-hour electricity supply during the examination period.

"The PUCSL has initiated a program of electricity demand management to continuously supply electricity during the night until February 17, the day the A/L examination will come to an end."

By implementing the program, the PUCSL is targeting to save 350 MW of electricity while reducing consumption between 6.00 pm and 10.00 pm. By saving  power through this method, it would be possible to provide continual power supply during the night until the end of the examination.

The PUCSL requests the public, government institutions, and the private sector to take following measures to reduce the power consumption and make sacrifices on behalf of the students appearing for the examination without any hindrance.

1. All domestic sector customers can reduce their demand by 50% between 6.00 pm and 9.00 pm to help manage electricity demand.

2. Private institutions can assist by turning off the lights of their display boards (billboards), name boards, and showrooms between 6.00 pm and 10.00 pm.

3. Switching off street lights between 6.00 pm and 10.00 pm by the agencies managing the street lights, including the local authorities.

4. Power supply from generators and inverters between 7.00 pm and 10.00 pm by consumers who own generators and inverters.

If people can contribute to the above four steps under the proposed electricity conservation program and reduce power consumption, it will be possible to save around 350 MW. So that electricity can be supplied at night until February 17, when the examination will come to an end.
