Politicians behind preventing police probe Easter Sunday attack: Catholic Church
Offering promotions to senior police officers who have been held responsible for the failure to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks cannot be accepted, the Catholic Church said yesterday.
A member of the social communications committee of the Colombo Archdiocese, Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini, told a press conference yesterday that these police officers are to be promoted at a request made by some senior politicians.
"These police officers have committed a crime by failing to avoid the Eater Sunday attacks, though there was a great opportunity to avoid it,” he added.
"DIG Deshabandu Tennekoon , ASP Sisira Mendis and OIC Katana Chaminda Nawaratne have been held responsible for the failure to prevent Easter Sunday attacks by the Presidential Commission which probed the attacks," he also said.
He said the incumbent IGP has been silent about the query made by Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith on the action which will be taken against DIG Tennekoon and others to date.
