Stepmom assaults girl while her father is abroad: Woman remanded

A 39-year-old woman was arrested by the Ragama Police over the brutal assault of a 17-year-old girl in Ragama, Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.

It is reported that the woman in question is the stepmother of the girl and her father had gone abroad.

He said an investigation was launched after several complaints were lodged with Ragama Police over the incident captured on CCTV and shared on social media.

The spokesman said the father had installed the CCTV in the house and that he could view its footage from abroad. It had helped the police to arrest the woman over the brutal assault of the girl.

He said the suspect, the stepmother of the girl, a resident of Ragama, has been remanded until March 24 after being produced before the Welisara Magistrate Court.

The girl had been admitted to the hospital for a medical examination
