Floods wreak havoc in the North
Around 1,977 people are reported to have been affected due to the flood situation which has developed in Kilinochchi since yesterday (Dec 22). According to the Disaster Management Centre, the flooding is believed to have occured as a result of heavy rains that were experienced in the area over the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, transportation along the A-9 main road has been affected after a tank collapsed in Kilinochchi yesterday due to the heavy rains and floods experienced in the area.
It is reported that several lower-level sluice gates of the Iranamadu Tank have been opened as Kilinochchi continues to face a rainfall of over 250 millimetres. Following the collapse of the tank, security forces have advised all tourists to take caution when travelling towards Jaffna via the A-9 road.
The Disaster Management Centre along with security forces had taken measures to move residents who were left stranded in the waters, to safer locations. Meanwhile, the Metereological Department has said that showers or thundershowers may occur in the Northern Province. Issuing a weather forecast, the Department also said that several spells of showers will occur in Eastern and North-central provinces.
