State of Emergency in Srilanka- concerns raised by SJB & TNA
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has raised concerns over the President’s decision on the declaration of a State of Emergency under and in terms of the Public Security Ordinance.
Issuing a statement, the main opposition party claimed the move has been carried out with “ulterior motives towards further wrongfully restricting fundamental rights of the citizenry, and moving further in the direction of authoritarianism.”
Earlier, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian M. A. Sumanthiran also pointed out that declaring a State of Emergency under the Public Security Ordinance is an unwarranted act.
Speaking to the media, he said this spells great danger to Sri Lanka, adding that the President himself will make emergency regulations surpassing considerations of health and food supplies.
