Controversial cabinet paper from Wimal!
Necessary permission has been granted to assemble vehicles in the country, it was revealed today (07).
Speaking at the weekly cabinet briefing held today, co-Cabinet Spokesman, Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana stated that the relevant Cabinet paper was tabled by the Minister of Industries (Wimal Weerawansa).
"Vehicle imports to Sri Lanka have been suspended due to the ongoing foreign exchange crisis. We hope that this crisis would be resolved gradually. Until then, the Minister of Industries has submitted a cabinet paper and necessary permission has been granted to assemble vehicles in the country. This is being done by the private sector," he said.
A group of vehicle importers have reportedly being leveling charges that the new cabinet paper provides official permission to assemble vehicles in a manner where the chassis and vehicle body parts are imported separately and then assembled in Sri Lanka.
Of late, Police have arrested a large number of persons evading tax while engaged in such rackets.
