The Central Bank of Sri Lanka had printed Rs. 26 Billion on Monday (24), official data revealed.

The amount of money printed by the central bank has risen to Rs. 146 Billion in 2022.

CBSL data further highlighted that money has been printed thrice so far this year on the 18th, 20th, and the 24th of January 2022.

A USD 100 Mn Sri Lanka Development Bond auction went undersubscribed in January 2022, after only USD 77.8 million came in from investors.

The final date of transferring the bonds to the investors was Monday (24).

Meanwhile, SJB MP Eran Wickremaratne pointed out that usually, money is printed by considering the economic growth in consultation with the monetary board and the central bank governor, as there is a monetary law, which the decisions are usually made in line with.

“We have learned that 1.4 trillion had been printed within the last 2 years, as the total money printed by the central bank for decades isn’t even equal to that amount,” he added.
