SLFP to support the govt.?

Reports say that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has responded favourably to a request made by PM Ranil Wickremesinghe to support the new government.

SLFP Leader Maithripala Sirisena has written to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today (15) in this regard, reports add.

According to sources, a meeting between the PM and the 12 SLFP MPs is to take place tomorrow morning.

It is said that the matter of whether the SLFP MPs would take up portfolios in the government will be taken up.

Meanwhile, the SLFP politburo meeting has been postponed to 10.00am Tuesday (17). SLFP Badulla district MP - Chamara Sampath Dissanayake had firmly stated that he would back the government no matter what the stance of the SLFP was.

Earlier, a group of SLFPs had decided to crossover to the government, but in order to prevent the party being split into two, the entire party has decided to support the government instead.

The SLFP had previously decided only to support any correct decisions taken by the government without actually joining the government ranks.
