National Transport Commission Director General - Dr Thilan Miranda has said that they are currently working to revise the bus fares in line with the reduction of fuel prices.

He added that recommendations will be made to the Secretary of the Ministry of Transport this afternoon and that bus fares could drop by almost 2%.

Pvt. bus operators also open to fare drop
Meanwhile, General Secretary of the All Ceylon Private Bus Owners’ Federation Anjana Priyanjith said bus fares must be revised based on the national policy on bus fare revision.

He noted that if diesel prices are revised by four percent, bus fares must be amended based on the national policy.

Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association Gemunu Wijeratne meanwhile said they are also prepared to reduce bus fares, if they receive adequate fuel to operate buses.

Trishaw fares to be reduced too?
Three-wheeler operators say attention has been drawn towards reducing fares in line with the fuel price revision.

The President of the All-Ceylon Three-Wheeler Owners’ Association, Sudil Jayaruk said they are not in a position to reduce the fare for the first km which is Rs.100 but are looking at the possibility of reducing the Rs.100 fare to Rs.90 which is charged from the second km onwards.

The government yesterday reduced petrol and diesel prices.

Accordingly, the price of a litre of 92-octane petrol was reduced by Rs.20 and will be sold at Rs.450 per litre.
