25 year old software engineer arrested for scamming cancer patients
A 25-year-old software engineer has been arrested on charges of having financially defrauded over Rs. 10 million from several patients with cancer and kidney diseases.
The suspect was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department yesterday based on seven complaints registered with the Police with regard to the financial scam.
Investigations have revealed that the youth has contacted patients and obtained information related to their illness and bank accounts promising to deposit Rs. 100,000 to the accounts for their treatment.
He had obtained the bank account details as well as the SMS OTP for transactions after which he had transferred money from the patients’ bank accounts to his personal account.
The suspect who had completed his software engineering degree in Singapore is reported to have stolen over Rs. 10 million via the financial scam.
He was arrested while staying at a lodge in Velaveediya, Colombo, and has been identified as a resident of Eravur.
The suspect will be produced in court following the completion of Police interrogations.
The Police have requested cancer and kidney patients who have been financially defrauded in such a manner to immediately inform their nearest Police station. (NewsWire)
