Digital driving licence to be introduced
The Cabinet of Ministers has given the approval to introduce a digital driving licence in Sri Lanka, the Cabinet spokesperson, Minister Bandula Gunawardena.
Addressing the media briefing to announce Cabinet decisions this morning (Oct. 11), he stated that a driving licence containing a QR code would be introduced in the future, instead of the one with a microprocessor chip.
The lawmaker had submitted the proposal to the Cabinet of Ministers in his capacity as the Minister of Transport and Highways.
The Cabinet of Ministers has given instructions to conduct an in-depth study into the matter and to inform relevant technical and expert committees in this regard.
Speaking further, Minister Gunawardena said the government expects to resolve the shortage of materials to print driving licences, which was exacerbated by the forex crisis, within this year.
