Racketeers using ploy to bring drugs to schools like toffees, chocolates: Minister
A ploy was being used by drug racketeers to bring in narcotics to schools under disguise of selling toffees and chocolates, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said today.
He told Parliament that it was revealed that the drug racketeers bringing drugs including Ice to schools in the form of toffees and chocolates and that it should be stopped.
Responding to a question by SJB MP Mayantha Dissanayake, the Minister said a pilot project covering 144 schools in the Colombo District was set to be introduced from November this year which would focus issues faced by the school children.
"This pilot project will focus on provision of mid-day meal, counselling and career guidance of school children. The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) will also cooperate in this programme," he said.
Responding to another question, the Minister said steps have been taken to provide uniforms to school children by the first term.
"70% of the requirement is supplied by China. Tender will be called to supply the remaining 30%," he said. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
