Six opposition groups to form a broad alliance ahead of local government polls
In aiming for the upcoming local government polls, a broad political alliance consisting of six rebel and opposition groups is expected to be unveiled within this week, according to sources.
The discussions are already underway among Dullas Alahapperuma’s Freedom People’s Congress (FPC), Wimal Weerawansa’s Uttara Lanka Sabagaya (ULS), the team led by rebel MP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Sri Lanka Freedom Party, MP Patali Champika Ranawaka’s 43rd Brigade and Sri Lanka Mahajana Pakshaya.
In addition, several MPs from the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) are set to join this Alliance amidst the proposed hike in electricity tariffs.
The proposed Alliance is set to break away from the tradition of rallying around a main party as seen in alliances in the past. It is reported that proposals to assign the responsibility of leading the alliance to co-leaders, a leadership board, or a chairman board representing all groups are at the discussion level and a final decision will be made on those proposals within the next few days.
