Woman arrested for running over two puppies after video goes viral
A 27-year-old woman was arrested by the Mathurata Police after a video showing a vehicle running over two puppies went viral on social media over the weekend.
Police said investigations have been initiated on a complaint received at the Mathurata Police Station on February 18 regarding a video circulated on social media about two puppies being killed on purpose.
Accordingly, during the investigation, it was revealed that the incident was reported on February 17 in Kadurakade area on the Padiyapalella - Rikilagaskada Road.
It was observed from the CCTV installed in a nearby house that two 2-month-old puppies were run over by the front and rear wheels of a car.
The investigation was carried out based on the registration number of the car and it was revealed that the owner of the car was a resident of Mathurata area and the wife of the owner's elder brother was the driver at the time of the incident.
The 27-year-old female suspect who was driving the car, was arrested after arriving at the police station to record a statement.
The police have charged her in accordance with the sections of the Animal Cruelty Act.
The suspect was produced before the Walapane Magistrate's Court where she pleaded guilty.
She was later released on a surety bond of Rs. 100,000.
