LG PollS to be held in several stages?

A crucial discussion, between the Election Commission (EC) and the Finance Ministry Secretary, will take place today (7) on holding of the Local Government Election 2023. A proposal on holding the election in several stages will be forwarded during this discussion, Ceylon Today reliably learns.

According to highly placed EC sources, the election will be held in stages according to the Finance Ministry’s ability to release the required funds. Therefore, the election would take place in different districts on different dates.

If the election is held in several stages, several dates would have to be announced as election dates.

It is reported that this proposal will be taken into consideration during today’s discussion.

If both parties are agreeable, then another discussion will be held with all parties and independent groups that have submitted nominations for the election.

Apart from the Finance Ministry Secretary, the EC will meet the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Government Printer, the Postmaster General and several other officials.

Furthermore, another discussion will be held with political party secretaries and representatives today (7).
